The basic pandan tea often includes pandan leaves and sweeteners. Fresh pandan leaves are the key material of this beverage. Dried or frozen leaves are acceptable, but fresh ones will offer the best aroma. In addition, sweeteners are often added to balance and increase more flavors of the tea. 

Pandan tea is so easy to customize; therefore, there are numerous variations of its recipes. It is common to combine pandan leaves with green tea, lemongrass, or ginger to get a more complex drink. If you want to add caffeine to your drink, use some green or black tea. While ginger brings a spicy layer to the tea, lemongrass offers earthy and grassy notes. Besides, for more sourness, you can combine the tea with some lime or lemon wedges.

Making pandan tea using fresh leaves

Ingredients:

  • 5 – 10 fresh pandan tea leaves: choose the vibrant green, fresh-looking leaves.
  • Sweetener: you can use any available sweeteners, including refined sugar, palm sugar, brown sugar, or honey. 
  • 1 – 2 slices of fresh ginger 
  • Water

Instructions:

  • Cut off the root of pandan leaves. Rinse them carefully to remove all the dust. 
  • Bruise the leaves with your hands and then tie them into a knot.
  • Add those leaves and 2 slices of ginger into a pot, and pour 1 liter of water into the pot. Let it simmer under a low heat. If you want to add other ingredients like lemongrass or tea, add them at this step. 
  • After steeping for about 15 minutes, the liquid color will gradually turn light green. 
  • Turn off the heat, add the sugar, and stir well to allow it to dissolve. Adjust the amount based on your taste. If you use honey instead of sugar, remember to wait for the tea to cool first.  
  • Pour the tea liquor into a cup and you can enjoy hot pandan tea now. Otherwise, let them cool, and then add some ice cubes to make iced pandan tea.

Does pandan tea have caffeine?

Pandan leaves, which are from the pandan plant, do not naturally contain caffeine.
