What is lychee boba tea?
Lychee boba tea originated from Taiwan and has become popular around the world. Typically, this drink consists of black or green tea, cool milk, chewy tapioca pearls, and a pleasant lychee flavor to tie everything together. Those ingredients create a harmonious combination, bringing a refreshing and enjoyable experience. Chewy boba and sweet, fragrant lychee milk tea combine to provide a satisfying beverage that is ideal for hot days. Thanks to its inviting fragrance and wonderful flavor, lychee boba tea has been a favorite among those fond of fruity and floral drinks.
What are the ingredients of lychee boba tea?
Lychee
Lychee, also called litchi, is an exotic tropical fruit native to China, with a distinctive sweet and juicy meat and a floral undernote. It has a rough reddish-brown skin and a big black seed in the middle. The delicate and sweet lychee fruit will bring to the lychee boba tea a delightfully summery taste.
Fresh lychee will bring the best taste to your beverage. Besides, there are numerous canned lychee products which have a similar taste to the fresh ones. If those are not available for you, lychee powder or syrup are some alternative options.
Tea
Tea leaves have been renowned for their taste, as well as potential health benefits. When making lychee boba tea, tea is considered a crucial ingredient by adding a delightful deep, and bitter base. Both green and black tea can combine with lychee, but it seems that black tea will accentuate the lychee scent and bring a richer and more aromatic flavor. Additionally, you can also use lychee tea bag products, which can even enrich the lychee flavor of your drink!
Milk
To combine in lychee boba tea, you can use dairy-free or plant-based milk, depending on your preference. If you prefer a creamy texture, dairy-based milk is a better choice. On the other hand, some plant-based milk like oat, almond, or cashew milk can provide a slightly nutty flavor. Especially, for those who are looking for a vegan recipe, remember to select dairy-free milk.
Tapioca pearls
Tapioca pearls, or boba, are the characteristic ingredient that makes the difference and highlights the bubble tea industry. They do not add much to the drink’s flavors, but they will bring a wonderful texture with a funny experience. Tapioca pearls are made from flour and water and then formed into a sphere shape. There are a variety of flavors and colors of boba, meeting the diverse demands of tea drinkers.
Sweeteners
Sweeteners are usually added to create a richer texture and flavor for lychee boba tea. If you use black tapioca pearls, brown sugar is suggested to bring a caramel-like flavor. Besides, some commonly used sweeteners are refined sugar, honey, maple syrup, and so on.
How to make lychee boba tea?
There are numerous versions of lychee boba tea recipes, depending on personal taste and flavor. Here is a simple instruction that you can easily try at home. Let’s explore how to make lychee boba tea using fresh fruit:
Ingredients for 2 servings
- 2 black tea bags
- 6-10 fresh lychees
- 120ml dairy milk
- 60g tapioca pearls
- 20g brown sugar
- Water
- Ice cubes
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the tea base
Heat the water until it reaches 95-98℃. Add the tea bags and let them steep for 3-5 minutes. Then remove the tea bags and let the tea liquor cool down.
Step 2: Cook the tapioca pearls
Pour water into a pot and bring it to a boil. When the water boils, add the boba and keep the heat until the pearls float to the top. Turn off the heat and keep them in the pot for 5 more minutes.
Drain the pearls and put them in a bowl of cool water. After about 20 seconds, drain the water again. Then mix the cooked tapioca pearls with brown sugar and put them aside.
Step 3: Prepare the lychees and milk
With the fresh lychees, use a knife to peel the shell off. Remove the seeds in the middle to get the white, juicy lychee meat.
Put the milk and half of the lychees in a blender and blend them until smooth and creamy.
Step 4: Assemble the lychee boba tea
Scoop the tapioca pearls into each glass, then add fresh lychees, lychee-milk mixture, and cool tea liquor. Stir well and add some ice cubes to enjoy.
How to store lychee boba tea?
Lychee boba tea is best enjoyed right away, there are some suggestions to prevent wasting any leftovers. The easiest and simplest way is to keep it in the fridge. Leftover lychee milk tea can be stored in the fridge for up to a day. Besides, to prevent the pearls from hardening, try to filter or take them out and keep them in a different container at room temperature.
If you want to store lychee boba tea for longer, freezing is an idea. You can try freezing the liquor in ice cube trays. However, it is not recommended to put cooked tapioca pearls in the freezer, as once thawed, the texture will become mushy. Therefore, you might make the milk-tea mixture beforehand and keep it in the fridge. Before serving, prepare the pearls and assemble the beverage.
